Canary
Canaries don't require alot of attention so they are a perfect pet if you don't have alot of time on your hands. Canaries require a large cage so they can fly (never clip their wings) they fly around for excersise and can be very energetic. Although they fly alot they need perches to rest, wooden perches at different hights and different widths would be best. Cover the cage at night so your canary can get a good night sleep. Like any other bird canaries enjoy toys like Mirrors, bells, swings and acrilic but you have to place them so that it doesn't get in the way when they are flying. Canaries have a diet of seed mix and fruit such as apples, oranges, bananas etc.
Canaries aren't social birds, you can have one by itself.
Things you need to care for a canary:
- 1 food dish
- 1 water dish
- wooden perches
- 2-3 toys
- large/medium sized cage
If you were to get just one canary and you don't want noise than you should get a female because only the males sing loudly. The most popular colour canary is yellow but you can get other colours. The age of your canary is important, of course the younger the bird the longer you will have him/her. Canaries must be sited in a fresh atmoshpere as they are sensitive to polluted air. They must be away from gas and direct sunlight. Make sure you keep the cage spotless and if the perches need cleaning make sure there are other ones to take their place as canaries hate wet perches, it causes them discomfort. Have the perches alittle smooth but never completely smooth as it would be hard for the bird to grip. Canaries need shell grit but NEVER WET! Canaries like a treat so be sure to give them some apple and orange. You should also supply a cuttle bone. Once a year your canary will shed it's feathers, so they can grow new ones. Canaries will commence their moult sometime during the late Summer or early Autumn.
Breeding Canaries
Breeding canaries is very difficult, as they arn't a social bird just placing a male and female together will more likely end in disaster than in eggs. First of all keep canaries seperated until time to breed, Signs that males are in condition include dropping their wings when they sing, singing becomes harsher and louder, they may dance around on their perch etc. Females will often tear paper (to make a nest) and they may raise their tails and squat when males are nearby. Once you have seen those signs you can add a nest, one filled with nesting materials from a pet store. If you see the female add to the nest, you can add the male now. Breeding canaries should be fed a propper diet that includes enriched seed, A cuttle bone, Fruit daily and shell grit for the female to produce healthy eggs. A good sign is "Kissing" this means your canaries are still in condition. Once babies are eating on their own and not being fed by parents you can now seperate them into their own cage.
Thing you need to breed canaries:
- cup shaped nest
- water
- food
- cuttle bone
- shell grit
- 1 toy
- wooden perches
- large cage
- nesting material
Breeding canaries can be difficult but it is all worth it in the end.
